There are also farmers markets, historic houses, museums, craft shops and galleries, gardens and interesting churches to visit.
The ancient stannary town of Tavistock is only 4 miles away and its roots can be traced back to Saxon times. Today it is the largest town in West Devon where there is a regular pannier market, beautiful buildings, varied and interesting shops, cafes, a park, a river and canal walks. Tavistock has been voted ‘Britain’s Best Market Town’, ‘The West Country’s Best Food Town’ and ‘Devon’s Best Farmer’s Market’. The ancient abbey ruins date back to Mediaeval times and records show that cream teas were first served here.
Plymouth is approximately 10 miles away and is uniquely located between Dartmoor and the sea, and is a vibrant waterfront city. Soak up the atmosphere of the historic Barbican area, with its marina, aquarium, shops and cafes. Visit the famous Mayflower Steps where the Pilgrim Fathers bravely set sail for the New World. Plymouth Hoe is where Sir Francis Drake viewed the Spanish Armada. There is a variety of local shops and national stores, numerous restaurants and theatres.
